About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Oral-Wellness: Make Your Sandwich A Tooth-Friendly Sandwich

Eleanor Crawford

Somedays you just want a quick sandwich so you can go on with your day. You can do that and still keep your oral health in mind. The following is a simple way to make your cold sandwiches a little more tooth-friendly.

Oral-Enhancing Ingredients In Your Sandwich

The following ingredients will make your sandwich a powerful oral enhancer:

Aged Cheese

The recipe calls for a little cheese. As your dentist may have told you, cheese contains a healthy amount of calcium. Your teeth are mostly made of calcium, so this should help strengthen your teeth. But, what you may not be aware of is that aged cheese contains vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is often overlooked, yet it is essential to your oral health. Your body uses vitamin K2 to identify areas that need calcium, like your teeth, and helps recalcify these areas.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain an active ingredient called malic acid. Malic acid is a great oral-enhancing ingredient. For one, it helps stimulate your salivary glands to increase saliva production. Saliva contains several enzymes and minerals to help keep bacteria from attacking your teeth and gums. Not only that, but malic acid also helps whiten your teeth because it is slightly astringent. So consider adding a few tomato slices to your sandwiches even if you weren't too crazy about them before.

Fermented Vegetables

You can purchase fermented vegetables of your choice at your local health food store or a farmer's market. The reason you want fermented vegetables in your sandwich is because they contain probiotics. Studies have shown how probiotics can diminish the amount of cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. The reason is probiotics feed on bad bacteria, making your mouth a lot safer.

Make Your Dental Friendly Sandwich

You will need the following:

  • 2 fresh slices of bread
  • Fermented vegetables
  • Mayonnaise
  • Mustard
  • Tomatoes
  • Olive oil
  • An aged cheese of your choice
  • Cold cut meats

Steps:

  1. All you have to do is slightly saute your bread over medium heat using olive oil.
  2. Spread your mustard and mayonnaise.
  3. Top your sandwich with the rest of the ingredients to your liking, and enjoy.

As you can see, you can have a quick lunch on-the-go and still take care of your oral health. Remember that these ingredients are only meant to help prevent dental ailments. They do not replace your normal oral care regimen nor your dentist's advice. So be sure to keep up with regular dental visits at a clinic like Dillon Family Dental PLLC.
