About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Dealing With Bad Breath Quickly And Effectively When In Public

Eleanor Crawford

If you suffer from chronic bad breath, you most likely try to find ways to mask the smell or remove it completely so you do not offend others while in public. If you are out and about and notice a pungent odor coming from your mouth, try one of the following tips to quickly make your breath fresh and pleasing to be around.

Carry Around Help

If you have bad breath regularly, it is a good idea to start carrying breath fresheners if you plan on being out in public. Mints, gum, and sprays all work well at hiding odor. Another alternative is biting on a clove. Stick one or two in a small plastic bag for emergency use. Simply pop one in your mouth, bend the stem using your tongue so some of the essence is released and swish around in your mouth for a minute or two. Spit out the clove when it becomes too bitter. Your breath will be instantly fresher.

Have A Bite To Eat

When the salivary glands are not moving, odor in the mouth will be amplified as there is not enough moisture present to help wash away bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth. The acids inside the stomach can make the bad breath smell even worse. Because of this, it is a good idea to eat several times a day.

When something is eaten, the salivary glands start working, helping to fight odor as a result. Eating green, crunchy vegetables can help take away bad breath as they have a high moisture content and are full of chlorophyll, which naturally fights odor in the mouth. Stay away from known offensive odorous foods like garlic, onions, cheese, or tuna fish.

Citrus fruits are helpful in taking away bad smells in the mouth. Several spices are also known to help remove odor. If you are ordering food at a restaurant, ask for a slice of lemon for your drink or a sprinkle of cinnamon on your dessert. Anise and fennel seeds are also good choices for removing bad breath.

Scrape Off Bacteria

If you are nowhere near food or water, and your breath smells rather strong, excuse yourself to a private place to scrape your tongue. Since the tongue is pitted, it traps bacteria inside crevices. Scraping your tongue's surface can remove some of the bacteria that causes bad breath. Use something hard such as the edge of a spoon or fork. Apply pressure with the object to the back of your tongue and slide forward toward the tip, removing grime that may be causing odor in the process.
