About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Questions And Answers About Dental Implants

Eleanor Crawford

A dental implant may be recommended to aid in the replacement of one or more lost teeth. Although the procedure is fairly common, many people do not know much about dental implants. Here are a few questions and answers about this tooth restoration application:

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a screw that is drilled into the jawbone to replace the dental root of a tooth that is missing. The screw is made of titanium, which is biocompatible, so that your immune system is unlikely to reject it. After a dental implant is in place, your dentist will allow it to heal for a couple of months. During this healing process, the implant screw and the bone cells around it fuse. This fusion is called osseointegration and helps stabilize the implant in the bone.

If the implant is used to replace a single tooth, after the implant has become secure in the bone, an abutment is added to it. The final component of the single tooth replacement, which is the dental crown, is added to the abutment.

If multiple teeth are missing from the patient's mouth, dental implants may be used as supports for dental bridges or dentures.

How much does a dental implant cost?

A dental implant is priced between $2,400 and $3,000 if it is used to replace a single tooth. The additional crown and abutment cost $500 to $3,000, resulting in an average implant replacement cost of $4,263 for a single tooth.

Multiple implants may be used as supports for dental bridges and implant-supported dentures.  Two to six implants and the dental bridge they support may be priced between $3,500 and $30,000. In addition, two to six implants with an implant-support denture is also priced between $3,500-$30,000

What are the benefits of having a dental implant?

In addition to a dental implant looking like a natural tooth, there are additional advantages to having an implant. Here are a few of them:

  • Implants serve as place-keepers for adjacent teeth to prevent dental misalignment.
  • Implants stimulate the jawbone to help preserve jawbone density.
  • Implants are designed to last for the lifetime of the patient.

What are the risks of a dental implant?

There are a few risks associated with a dental implant. They are typically not serious and are often treatable. They include:

  • Implant Wound infection
  • Numbness from damage to a dental nerve
  • Sinus issues
