What to Do If a Tooth Suddenly Falls Out

All sorts of things can cause a tooth to fall out unexpectedly and all of a sudden. You could bite down on something hard, or you could trip and fall or be involved in another type of accident. Some people even lose a tooth while playing sports or when getting into a fight. No matter what causes your tooth to fall out, it is important to handle the situation properly. These are a few steps that you should take as soon as possible.
1. Save the Tooth
If you can find the tooth that has fallen out, make sure that you hold on to it. Rinse it off gently to get rid of any dirt that might have gotten on it, and consider holding it in place in the tooth socket. If you cannot hold the tooth in place or are afraid that you might accidentally swallow it, place it in a small container. To help keep the tooth safe, you can add milk to the container. If this is not an option, adding some of your own saliva can help.
2. Stop the Bleeding
After this type of accident, it is not uncommon for the tooth socket to start bleeding. It may even bleed profusely, depending on how severe the damage is. Applying a compress to the affected area is a good way to help slow down the bleeding until you are able to seek medical attention.
3. See a Dentist Immediately
Even though some situations can wait, this is not a situation in which you will want to wait until your next dental appointment. Instead, call a dentist's office such as Mapletree Family Dentistry right away. Some dental offices leave open appointments for emergencies, so your dentist might be able to fit you in even without your having an appointment. Your dentist might be able to advise you of an emergency dentist to go to if he or she is not able to see you; in fact, you may even be able to get this information if you call your regular office during after hours. If not, look for an emergency dentist in your area that does not require an appointment.
Losing a tooth all of a sudden is never a good thing, but if you follow the right steps, you can help ensure that you take care of the situation in the right way. Give these three steps a try so that you can increase the chances of things going well after this type of accident.
