About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Don't Like Your Smile? Problems You May Have And How They Can Be Taken Care Of

Eleanor Crawford

If you do not like the look of your smile, this could be due to many different things, such as a gummy smile and discolored teeth. Below is more information about these two things and how they can be treated. Once you get the right treatment, you will have a dazzling smile that you will be proud of.

Gummy Smile

If you smile and see more of your gums than your teeth, you should consider having a crown lengthening procedure done. This procedure is performed by a periodontist under local anesthesia. Once the area is completely numb, the dentist will make small incisions to remove all excess gum tissue. If you have a lot of gum tissue and bone is covering the crown on your teeth, the dentist may have to remove a small bit of bone also.

When the dentist is finished with the procedure, they will wash your gums with a sterile salt solution and they will then stitch up the incisions.

Not only will this procedure lengthen your crowns, it also helps prevent tooth decay. This is because more of your teeth are exposed so they can be brushed and flossed.

How long it takes you to recover from this procedure depends on how much gum the dentist removed.

Discolored Teeth

Many things can cause teeth to become discolored from drinking coffee to old age. The stains get on the outer layer of your teeth, which is known as the enamel.

No matter the reason your teeth are discolored, a cosmetic dentist can easily whiten your teeth to make them dazzle. The dentist can do this by applying a bleaching gel on your teeth. This tooth whitening process may only take one visit. If your teeth are very discolored, you may have to go back for a second visit.

If you are older, the enamel naturally yellows over time. This is because the enamel gets thinner as you age.

If the stains on your teeth are severe and the dentist cannot get them off, they will suggest other options. One option is covering your teeth with a composite bonding material that is color matched to your teeth. Another option you have is getting veneers. With this procedure, the dentist places ceramic shells over your discolored teeth.

Talk with a periodontist or cosmetic dentist about these procedures. They can go over them with you in much more detail so you can understand them better.
