About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Keeping Canker Sore Pain At Bay

Eleanor Crawford

When it comes to oral health, canker sores represent a fairly innocuous problem. Yet that doesn't mean that they can't still cause you a good deal of pain and discomfort. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to reduce the ill effects of a canker sore. If you would like to learn more about some simple home remedies, read on. This article will introduce you to three relief inducing and inexpensive ways to alleviate a canker sore.

Baking Soda Paste Or Rinse

Baking soda constitutes one of the simplest of all canker sore remedies. It is especially effective at warding off canker sores soon after they have begun to develop. All you'll need to do is mix together some baking soda with enough water to produce a paste with a consistency akin to that of toothpaste. Now dab a bit of this paste onto the canker sore and do your best to allow it to remain in place as long as possible.

Baking soda also offers effective relief when used as the basis of a mouth rinse. Simply dissolve a small quantity of the powder in a glass of warm water. Then gargle with it for up to a minute. You should find that the pain begins to ease quite quickly. Feel free to repeat this tactic as often as necessary—just be sure spit out and not swallow the rinse.

Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Baking soda isn't the only ingredient that can be used to make an effective mouth rinse; hydrogen peroxide is just as capable. In this case, simply create a solution using an equal proportion of hydrogen peroxide and tap water. You can then either gargle this solution or apply it more precisely using a cotton swab. The hydrogen peroxide not only helps to reduce the canker sore's inflammation, but it will also limit the growth of the bacteria responsible for the sore.

Milk Of Magnesia

Milk of magnesia remains a somewhat baffling substance for many people. Contrary to popular understanding, this chalky white fluid has no relation to dairy cows whatsoever. It consists, on the other hand, of a liquid suspension of the mineral magnesium hydroxide. It is often prescribed to combat heartburn and other issues associated with gastrointestinal distress. That said, it is also capable of reducing the pain associated with canker sores. Simply dab a bit of the solution onto the canker sore with a cotton swab. This tactic is especially effective when used just after performing a hydrogen peroxide rinse.
