About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Improving Your Smile? 3 Ways To Manage Having Braces As An Adult

Eleanor Crawford

You've always associated getting braces as something that happens to kids and teenagers. Yet, you now have an opportunity to finally improve your smile. Today, many adults are choosing to get braces to reduce the effect that an improper bite or gaps between their teeth have on their oral health. As you prepare to improve your smile, use these tips to make orthodontic treatment fit seamlessly into your life.

Plan For Your Appointments

Naturally, orthodontic treatment will require some creative scheduling when you are working and raising a family. During your initial consultation, talk to your dentist about how much time will be involved. Depending upon the type of braces you choose, you should expect to see your dentist at least every month or two to check on your progress. Once you know your schedule, use this to give your employer notice about your appointments and arrange for someone to watch your kids if necessary.

Explore New Options

Braces have come a long way since you were a kid, and many of your options are nearly undetectable from a distance. Clear dental braces are ideal if you have high aesthetic needs such as having a job that involves public speaking or an upcoming wedding. You can also remove plastic aligners when you want to eat your favorite foods or play on your company's softball team. Knowing your options gives you the best chance at making your treatment blend into your lifestyle.

Keep Up With Your Oral Hygiene

When you are in the throes of your career and caring for young children, it is easy to let your hygiene slide. However, skipping brushing your teeth for just a night can lead to problems with your oral health. Make sure to carve out time to take care of your teeth every day, and ask your dentist to show you how to properly brush with braces. This is also an ideal time to model good oral hygiene to your kids, so be sure to show them things such as how you clean your plastic aligners.

Picturing yourself with a mouth full of metal as an adult may make you cringe, but new options allow you to get straighter teeth without marring your current smile. By working with your dentist to accommodate your work schedule and lifestyle, you can love every moment of your treatment, especially the day that your new smile is revealed. Check with places like Orthodontic Associates to explore your options.
