About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Braces Off And Teeth Don'T Look Great? 2 Tips To Get Them Looking Great Again

Eleanor Crawford

If you just got your braces off you should now have perfectly straight teeth. If your actual teeth do not look great, however, you are likely not very happy with the results. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to get your teeth looking beautiful again, two of which are listed below.

Teeth Whitening

Your teeth may have a yellow tint due to the braces being on your teeth for a long time. If so, you can get your teeth whitened to get them looking good. There are many tooth whitening options available over the market. However, because your teeth are yellow due to braces you should have your teeth whitened by a dentist.

The dentist can whiten your teeth in their office. They first clean your teeth and then place a bleaching gel on them. In many cases they will use a special light to help remove stains. Your teeth will also be slightly sanded if needed to remove surface stains.

The dentist will protect your gums or lips during the whitening process, as the bleaching gel can be harmful.

The dentist can also send you home with a tooth whitening system. This system is as strong as what they use in the office. This includes trays that you put the bleaching gel into and then place the tray on your teeth for a certain amount of time. Your dentist will show you how it works.

Gum Grafting

In some cases, braces will cause your gums to recede. You can easily tell this because if you smile you will see much more gum that you used to see. To take care of this your dentist can do a procedure known as gum grafting after you have your braces taken off.

The dentist will first clean your teeth, also known as root planing and scaling. This is done differently than a traditional tooth cleaning. The dentist uses root planing and scaling to remove bacteria, plaque, and tarter building on the root surfaces. This helps your gums to heal much faster.

Once this is finished, the dentist will do the gum graft surgery. During this procedure, the dentist grafts your gum tissue to cover all exposed root surfaces. This will not only help the current gum recession but will also help prevent your gums from receding again in the future.

Talk with your dentist about these two options and they can give you many more details.
