About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

Had A Tooth Knocked Out? Know Your Options To Fix It

Eleanor Crawford

Sudden facial trauma, either from contact sports or an accident, can cause you to have a tooth knocked right out of your mouth. Your immediately thought will be what you can do to fix it. Here is what you should know about your options to fix that missing tooth.

Visit An Emergency Dentist

The first option that you should attempt is to visit an emergency dentist. It is important that you take great care when handling the tooth if you can recover it at all.  Only touch the tooth by its crown, put it in milk or your saliva to keep it moist, and visit an emergency dentist immediately. The sooner you act, the greater the chance is of the dentist being able to fix the missing tooth by putting it back into your jaw.

Get A Dental Bridge

Depending on where the tooth was lost, it is possible to get a dental bridge to fix it. This works by placing a crown on the healthy teeth surrounding the gap and attaching an artificial tooth that is supported by those crowns. The crowns essentially act as a bridge that keeps the artificial tooth in place.

Many people like this option because it is affordable and doesn't require any extensive surgery to fix the tooth. While the bridge can fail after many years of use, it is also very easy to fix.

Dental Implant

A permanent solution to a lost tooth is to get a dental implant. It involves surgically implanting a post into your jawbone, which gives the artificial tooth plenty of strength and support to act like a natural tooth.  When the procedure is finished, the tooth will blend in seamlessly, and nobody will know the difference.

However, a dental implant is one of the most expensive options to fix a missing tooth. The surgical procedure also takes many weeks to verify that the post has integrated with the jawbone, leaving you with a temporary tooth that can easily become damaged.

You must also qualify for a dental implant by having the strength in your jaw bone. If not, you'll need a bone graft in the area where the implant will go.

Partial Denture

You can also get a partial denture to fill in a single missing tooth. These dentures have a flexible base that allows it to fit snugly between your existing teeth, and it can be used for as little as a single missing tooth.  Keep in mind that it can slip out of place, and doesn't have the same strength as any other option to replace a missing tooth.
