About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

4 Benefits Of Porcelain Crowns

Eleanor Crawford

While you may have heard of metal crowns before, porcelain crowns are also an option. Porcelain crowns use a special porcelain material to make tooth-colored crowns. If your dentist has suggested a crown for one or more of your teeth, check out these four benefits of porcelain crowns.

1. Porcelain Looks Like Natural Teeth

The porcelain used in crowns has a translucent appearance like real teeth. This allows them to look almost completely real. The color of the porcelain can be altered to match surrounding teeth, or with all new crowns, you can get a white, bright smile. The crowns come in all-porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal. The porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have some discoloration near the bottom, where the metal can be seen through the porcelain, but this area is mostly hidden by your gums.

2. They Fix Many Cosmetic Problems

Dental crowns are also great because they fix many cosmetic problems. For starters, if you have a tooth that is cracked, damaged, or discolored from trauma, a porcelain crown hides these imperfections to make your tooth look perfect. If you have multiple damaged teeth or crooked/gapped teeth, replacing most or all of your teeth with dental crowns can give you a nearly flawless smile by making them look straight.

3. They Strengthen Teeth

Unlike porcelain veneers, dental crowns also strengthen teeth. Teeth can become weak if you fail to follow good oral hygiene. If you have a lot of big fillings, your teeth are weakened. When you eat, the pressure is distributed unevenly, and it may put extra strain on these weak spots, causing the tooth to break or shatter. A crown protects the tooth and it defends it from bacteria by providing an impenetrable barrier. You will need to keep your teeth properly cleaned at the gum line where the crowns stop.

4. They Can Be Placed on All Teeth

Another downside to porcelain veneers is they can only be placed on the front teeth, but many people want to improve the look of their entire smile. Dental crowns can be placed on all teeth, even the back teeth. Typically, the dentist will used porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns on back teeth and all-porcelain on front teeth where any discoloration would be more noticeable.

Dental crowns can give you a healthy and beautiful smile you've always wanted. Even if you have weak teeth, dental crowns can make them stronger.
