About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

2 Kinds Of Dental Filling Material

Eleanor Crawford

When you have cavities, your dentist is going to fill them. The longer they go without being filled, the more damage you are going to get to your teeth. When it comes to the fillings, there are a lot of different options that the dentist can use, depending on where on your tooth and where in your mouth the tooth is. So, what are some of the choices?

Silver Amalgam

These fillings are made up of a mix of silver and several other metals. They are very common for a lot of reasons, including the fact that the material is fairly easy for your dentist to use and to pack into the cavity. The amalgam is also non-reactive to blood and saliva, making it perfect for a filling material. Silver amalgam also tends to be pretty long-lived, so you likely won't need to have it replaced anytime soon. There are a couple of drawbacks. One is that it is pretty obvious that you have one of these fillings because they are pretty differently colored to your tooth. Your dentist is likely to use amalgam on the back of your teeth, on teeth in the back of your mouth, or on the bite surface on molars, all places where it is harder to see.

Ceramic

Another filling material is ceramic. This is a special mix of dental porcelain that is very strong and durable. A ceramic filling is less likely to stain or discolor or to wear down from usage. Your dentist can also make sure that the ceramic filling matches your tooth exactly because the material can be dyed as it is being prepared. That makes ceramic fillings a good choice for surfaces on your teeth that are going to be easily seen or if you are in an industry where you need to look like you have perfect teeth. One drawback to this material is the fact that it is more expensive than other options out there. Your insurance company may limit how many ceramic fillings they will pay for because of that fact. They may also have limits as to which teeth and surfaces they will pay to have a ceramic filling placed.

If you have cavities or think you do, you should go see your dentist immediately. The sooner you can get them diagnosed and get your teeth treated, the better off your oral health is going to be.
