Root canals can be among the most dreaded dental treatments that patients may need. While much of this dread is unfounded, patients can nevertheless allow it to cloud their understanding of this routine and necessary procedure.
How Will You Know Whether A Root Canal Is Going To Be Needed?
Whether or not a root canal will be necessary can be almost impossible for a patient to know. While individuals may assume that the presence of intense pain will always indicate that this is required, there are many instances where the pain may not indicate that the nerve is actually infected. Additionally, a lack of pain may not always indicate that the issue is minor as it is possible for serious disease or damage to result in the death of the nerve, which will result in a loss of sensation. Only a dentist will be able to determine whether a root canal is required, and they will likely need to do a full evaluation that involves x-rays. Otherwise, it may be impossible to accurately determine the extent of the damage to the tooth.
Will You Have To Take The Entire Day Off From Work?
The actual root canal procedure will be fairly quick. Depending on the location of the tooth, the root canal may take little more than a normal filling to complete. Unfortunately, individuals may find that it is necessary to take the entire day off from work. This is due to the local anesthetics that are used. It can take them several hours to wear off, and you may have difficulty with speaking or otherwise controlling your mouth during this time. For those that must speak or directly interact with clients and customers, this may make it necessary to take the entire day off from work.
Is It Necessary To Undergo Repeated Root Canals?
For patients that are needing to undergo a root canal procedure, it is often assumed that they will need to have this procedure done multiple times to fully correct their problem. However, this is usually not the case as an experienced dentist will typically be able to remove all of the infection from the tooth during the initial treatment. In some instances, additional root canals on the same tooth may be needed, but this is usually a rare situation. A crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it and help to prevent infection from returning. If it becomes damaged or loosened, you should have it replaced to avoid the risk of an infection developing and needing to undergo a root canal again.
