About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

What Dentist Should You Choose For Your Autistic Child?

Eleanor Crawford

Picking dentists for your children can feel daunting, largely because there are so many dentists to choose from and each of your children may have different needs. Your autistic child in particular may have very special needs when it comes to dentists and the dental work they do because of their sensitivity to touch, sight, sounds, and their unique way of approaching social scenarios.

While you can choose a pediatric dentist for your autistic child, this isn't your only option for getting them the care they need. When choosing dentists for a child with autism, use this guide to help you select the best one.

Choose a dentist with skill and experience with special needs children

Some dentists go to school for additional training in children with special needs regarding dental care. Autistic children don't often have any additional dental health care needs but they may handle a dental experience in a different way than other children. They can benefit from dentists who have experience working with similar children. If your child has epilepsy or sensory processing issues in addition to autism, then locating the right dentists for their needs is especially necessary.

Choose a dentist with skill and experience with special needs children if your child is nonverbal, has extreme sensitivities to touch or sound, or if they have issues managing their emotions or impulses in public. The right dentists can approach your special needs child in an appropriate way that will help your autistic child complete their exams in comfort.

Choose a dentist who can offer private rooms

Some children dentists work with their patients in large, open rooms to make appointments go faster and to allow more than one patient at a time to be treated. For the safety and benefit of your autistic child, it may be better to have your child be allowed to have their dental work done in a room that is private and quiet. Consider choosing dentists who have both open spaces for general checkups so your other children can receive quality dental care, and smaller private rooms for your autistic child to have a more private and safe experience.

Your autistic child should be part of the decision when it comes to choosing dentists for their oral health care. Allow your autistic child to see a dental practice in person during slow or lunch hours so they can familiarize themselves with the surroundings. Your child's dentist can work with your entire family to help you have the positive experience you desire for your young ones.
