About Verity Longpar

Welcome to my site! My name is Verity. I work as a receptionist in a dentist office. Every day for the past 20 years, I have come in to the office, worked on paperwork, and greeted patients. I love my job, because it has helped me meet a lot of really wonderful people. I have seen families grow up! But an added benefit from my job is that I have also picked up some small information about dentistry. I'm not one of the dentists, but I do know quite a bit about simple procedures and basic dental hygiene. Hopefully this blog can teach you something, but remember to always consult with your actual dentist for real professional advice!

2 Flossing Questions That You Always Wanted To Know The Answer To

Eleanor Crawford

Do you think you know all there is to know about brushing your teeth? There may be a few questions about flossing that you don't know the answer to.

Does The Order Of Flossing And Brushing Matter?

Dentists always stress the importance of flossing and brushing your teeth every single day, and hopefully, you are doing it every single day. However, have you ever thought about the order that you should be doing these two things in? You'll be mistaken if you think that you can turn to the American Dental Association to get the answer because they don't have a recommendation about whether brushing or flossing should come first. All that they recommend is that you floss at least once a day to get rid of the plaque in the hard-to-reach places between your teeth.

So which one do you do first? If you floss before you brush, you'll dislodge those food particles before you brush and get the bristles to touch the teeth instead of food. If you brush before you floss, then the dental floss can actually help get the toothpaste between your teeth where it normally can't go. Do what works best for you, and consider asking your dentist for their recommendation based on your mouth.

Are Dental Picks Good For Flossing?

Dental picks are becoming very popular for flossing due to how it makes the process a little bit easier. But is it better or worse than using traditional floss? Dental picks have their advantages and disadvantages, and if they encourage you to floss because you don't like traditional dental floss, then continue to use them. They can also be good for people who don't have the dexterity in their hands to work the dental floss between their teeth.

However, be aware that you are not going to be able to wrap the floss around your teeth as closely with a dental pick. This can lead to surfaces of the tooth not being cleaned because you can form the floss into that C shape that wraps around the tooth. In addition, you have to manually wipe down the floss between teeth, rather than unroll a little more floss between your fingers to have a clean piece. This can cause people to move the plaque around their mouth from one tooth to the next, rather than completely eliminate it from their mouth.

Ask your dentist if you have more questions about flossing.
