6 Tips For Helping Your Child Relieve Discomfort From Braces

It is very common for children to need braces to correct various orthodontic issues, like misaligned teeth, overbites, and underbites. Braces can help your child achieve a straight and beautiful smile, boosting his or her self-confidence. However, wearing braces can be quite uncomfortable at first.

Here are a few ways to help your child relieve discomfort from braces.

Use an Ice Pack

It is normal for your child's mouth to feel quite sore after just getting braces. An effective way to alleviate the soreness is to use an ice pack. Have your child place an ice pack to his or her mouth for several minutes at a time. If the ice is too uncomfortable, have your child put a paper towel underneath.

Eat Soft Foods

Since your child's mouth will be sore for the first few days after getting braces, he or she should only consume soft foods. If your child eats hard or crunchy foods, such as meat, chips, or candy, it can increase discomfort. Advise your child to stick to foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and soup for the first few days.

Massage Gums

Your child's gums will likely feel a little tender after getting braces. Luckily, massaging the gums can help alleviate the pain and is very simple to do. Instruct your child to carefully massage the gums with one finger.

Give Your Child a Pain Reliever

Some children may experience more severe pain after just getting braces. If your child is having trouble falling asleep or doing regular activities because of the pain, you should think about giving him or her an over-the-counter pain reliever. It can temporarily reduce inflammation, which can help reduce the pain.

Use Wax

Before you leave the orthodontist's office, remember to ask for wax. It can be really helpful when your child is experiencing discomfort from braces. Placing the wax on the brackets or teeth can help minimize friction, ultimately reducing pain. 

Gargle Saltwater

Saltwater is also effective for alleviating discomfort in the mouth. Combine salt with warm water and have your child swish the solution for about a minute. The solution can reduce inflammation and swelling.

Getting braces might not be fun at first, but following these tips can help improve your child's comfort during this time.
